Claire Goldsmith interview with Luxury Travel Stories…!!!

Claire Goldsmith

by on • 11:33 am

The great granddaughter of Oliver Goldsmith, Claire Goldsmith has relaunched the label, adding a modern sensibility to the classic shades.  Keeping true to the tradition, these glasses are still handmade in England, a process overseen by the original craftsmen. While the 60′s guestbook records entries from the likes of Sophia Lauren, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Michael Caine, Oliver Goldsmith glasses can now be found featured in the glossies on the likes of Jude Law, Kate Moss and Robbie Williams.

The first to position glasses as fashion accessories, Oliver Goldsmith has been described by the V&A Museum as “the originator of fashion eyewear” and is “to eyewear design what Vidal Sassoon is to hair and Mary Quant to clothes”.

‘This picture was taken at the Dorchester in 1966 and is of my grand-father (centre), father (on the right) and uncle. It was at a UK optical fair, everyone else was wearing the standard navy suit with a briefcase full of spectacles, but my grand-father was an innovator, no one had seen anything like that before; their booth, the white suits – he was ahead of his times in design and style. I love this
photo for everything it represents, and also the family nostalgia.’

Claire Goldsmith….The LEGACY continues….!!!

CLAIRE GOLDSMITH INTRODUCES 4 NEW DESIGNS TO THE ACLAIMED CG: LEGACY COLLECTION

The collection has set tongues wagging about the future potential of the Goldsmith name in eyewear. It has been said that whilst the past firmly belongs to her great grandfather, Oliver Goldsmith, the future could well be led by the CG brand, driven by Claire and her present day team of eyewear enthusiasts.

The collection which currently carries 10 styles inspired by the Oliver Goldsmith aesthetic, combines old school heavy-weight acetates with new school contouring and sleek lines. Claire understands the constant demand for vintage styling within eyewear, especially optical frames. However as a designer she wants to move forward with design and not just look back. With LEGACY, she is focused on adding a modern twist and a touch of refinement to the hugely popular heavy plastic frames made famous by her family.

“It would have been too predictable and all too easy to simply re-produce Oliver Goldsmith designs  as we have done in the past. I really think the market wants more from eyewear designers now. Every man and his dog are producing vintage designs and it has become hard to tell the difference between an Oliver Goldsmith frame and a mass produced high street frame. Customers have seen vintage, vintage and more vintage. They now want to see something ‘new’. Legacy takes everything good about vintage styling but really adds a new and refined touch to the styling. CG introduces contoured temples, single coloured acetates and a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that means when you touch the frames you know you are holding something that has been loved throughout the process to create it.”  Claire hopes that Legacy might be ‘the vintage of the future.”

For Goldsmith, passion and pride in what you do, are the most important ingredients when making something. “If both of these emotions are present in your work, your work will reflect that and people will see it.”

The four new styles (Cosby; Corben; Reily & Campbell) all named after people who are prominent in Goldsmith’s life, continue to grow Legacy. 14 styles come in 5 colour ways each. They will be available across Europe, USA, Canada, & Australia from October 2010.
